New website for the Feline Grimace Scale designed by WSAVA Global Pain Council Members

Check it out for information on this simple but effective instrument for acute pain assessment

The Feline Grimace Scale (FGS), a tool that uses changes in facial expressions to assess pain, now has its own website. The FGS was developed and validated at the laboratory of Dr Paulo Steagall, in collaboration with researchers at the Université de Montréal. Dr Steagall is co-chair of the WSAVA Therapeutic Guidelines Group, a member of the WSAVA Global Pain Council and an advisor to the WSAVA Global Dental Committee. He developed the FGS website, assisted by fellow Global Pain Council member, Dr Beatriz Monteiro.

The website offers education in the use of the FGS to improve acute feline pain assessment and to promote feline health and welfare. It explains how the scale was developed and validated and makes recommendations as to how to use it and interpret the scores. A range of downloadable resources is also available and a new feature, enabling users to practice their skills by scoring images of cats with different degrees of naturally-occurring pain, is in development.

Videos of local anesthetic techniques can be viewed directly from the website, which is available in English, French, Spanish, Japanese and Simplified Chinese.

We congratulate Paulo, Bea and the team on this great new resource for assessing pain in cats!
