2021 IPFD Breed-specific Information

Veterinarians are so needed in the discussion on breed-specific problems to help provide the best health, well-being, and welfare for the dogs, for your clients, and for our profession.

If you have been following IPFD and our breed articles in 2021 you would know that (see further links below):

  • IPFD has loads of breed-specific information to help you improve your knowledge and communication with your clients – see: Breed-Specific Questions, Answers, Tools and Resources.
  • We have so far covered these breeds with our “Get A GRIHP!” articles adding or updating info in 2021: Get a GRIHP! on Australian Shepherds, Bernese Mountain Dogs, Black Russian Terriers, Dachshunds, Finnish Spitz, French Bulldogs , Golden Retrievers, Pugs, Rhodesian Ridgebacks, Rottweilers, Salukis, and Welsh Corgis.
  • Additionally, there are 180 listings in our breeds database.
  • Controversies and challenges are common these days. Some veterinary stress relates to breed-specific issues, especially in dogs with extreme conformation. The veterinary response to challenges is sometimes extreme as well. For example, veterinarians in Europe are asking people not to buy flat-faced dogs – but these dogs are among the most popular in the many countries. How can we move forward collaboratively?

Look for IPFD in the WSAVA Bulletin in 2022 for more breeds like Whippets and Belgian Shepherds, more information on breed-specific controversies and challenges, e.g. genetic testing, legal challenges to breeders, and enhanced regulations on veterinarians breeding compromised dogs.

Check out this video to make you feel good about dogs and people as we work our way out of 2021 and into 2022!

All the best for this holiday season!
