Feeding dogs with osteoarthritis; prevention through rehabilitation

This presentation will cover common causes of osteoarthritis (OA) and co-morbidities with an emphasis on obesity and nutritional approaches to maintain ideal body weight in working dogs as well as reducing weight in dogs that are sedentary. Approaches to managing and rehabilitation related to generalized OA, back pain, ruptured cruciate ligaments, shoulder and elbow disorders will be covered. Nutritional approaches including commonly used supplements and food and when to choose each will be covered. Nutritional approaches to OA in cats will also be covered.

Nutritional management of canine epilepsy

This presentation will cover the common causes of epilepsy in dogs, typical approaches to diagnosis, pharmaceutical treatment and use of nutrition as adjunctive therapy. Long term management of dogs that are responsive to therapy as well as refractive to treatment will be discussed. Specifically, the metabolism of medium-chain triglycerides will be covered and how they have been shown to reduce the frequency of seizures in affected dogs.

Current knowledge about using antibiotics for gastrointestinal disease

This presentation will address common gastrointestinal disorders that are treated with antibiotics. The dysbiosis index will be introduced and described and current research studies that show the short and longer term impact of antibiotics on the gastrointestinal microbiome will be presented. Alternative therapeutic approaches including nutrition will be presented.

Nutritional approaches to lower urinary disease in cats

This presentation will cover the most common lower urinary tract disorders in cats including idiopathic cystitis, struvite and calcium urolithiasis. The incidence and underlying pathophysiology of each will be presented. Common nutritional approaches for acute and long-term management will be discussed as well as likelihood of recurrence. How to communicate to cat owners about diagnosis and management will also be discussed.
