Pain Committee

Goal

The Pain Committee works to raise awareness of the fact that all animals are sentient and, as a result, feel pain.   It also aims to increase the competence and confidence of our members in identifying and managing their patients’ pain as one of their most important priorities.

Objectives

  • Develop educational initiatives, including global guidelines, to promote an improved understanding of animal pain and its management, while recognizing regional differences in attitude, education and available analgesic modalities.

  • Build capability and capacity in assessing and managing animal pain internationally through the supported development of talent in this area.

History

The GPC met for the first time in April 2012 when the urgent need was recognized to develop guidelines and other resources to promote improved knowledge of pain management in companion animals from a global perspective.
