Standards Steering Committee

Goal

The Standards Steering Committee (SSC) is dedicated to overseeing the development and implementation of the WSAVA’s Essential Standards for Companion Animal Veterinary Practices (ESCAVP). By establishing clear and practical veterinary practice standards, the committee aims to enhance patient care, improve veterinary team performance, and support the global advancement of companion animal veterinary practices.

Objectives

  • Identify and collaborate with key strategic partners to aid in the development and launch of the ESCAVP.
  • Develop a structured project plan covering all phases, including research, drafting, review, approval, and implementation.
  • Define essential fields relevant to modern companion animal veterinary practice and incorporate them into the ESCAVP framework.
  • Establish a standardized format for the documentation and presentation of ESCAVP guidelines.
  • Create comprehensive standards that enable veterinary practices to assess their operations, identify areas for improvement, and access resources for further support.

History

The SSC was established in 2024 following a strong consensus among WSAVA Member Associations on the need for essential standards in companion animal veterinary practices. The initiative originated from discussions at the WSAVA Regional Member Forum in 2022 and was further endorsed at the WSAVA General Assembly in 2023. Recognizing the importance of structured accreditation standards to support veterinary practices worldwide, WSAVA appointed the SSC to lead the development and implementation of the ESCAVP.
