ACTAsia announces winner of Project Pain Free in China

Congratulations to Dr Yuanming Yu from Guangxi province, Liuzhou city, who receives a free registration to #WSAVA2021!

ACTAsia is an Educational Partner of the WSAVA, providing professional education for veterinary surgeons in China with the aim of improving animal welfare, through its Train the Trainer network and its collaboration with Vets for Compassion. In 2019 veterinarians from ACTAsia translated the WSAVA’s Global Pain Guidelines into Chinese and, in February 2020, it initiated a program of activity, including a series of webinars, to ensure veterinarians across the country recognized and adopted them.

In order to further promote the importance of pain management, ACTAsia ran a contest called Project Pain Free 2020, asking veterinarians to put the Guidelines into practice in whatever way they felt comfortable – with their team in their own practice, colleagues or with owners, as a webinar, at a conference on social media etc.

The winning entry from Dr Yu demonstrated through three case studies that he had understood the Guidelines and was able to apply them to a range of cases: an orthopaedic surgery for a dog, a caesarean section for a dog and a fracture in a cat following a traumatic fall. His case studies demonstrated a variety of pain management methods, including specific doses of medication, a range of cases and appropriate discussion.

Commenting on the success of Project Pain Free 2020, Dawn Peacock of ACTAsia, says: “50 veterinarians, 50 owners and two animal protection organizations took part in the contest which facilitated the discussion of the WSAVA Global Pain Management Guidelines in veterinary circles across China. The availability of medicines, procedures and protocols were discussed and disseminated by veterinarians in our network who showed a keen interest in improving outcomes for animals.”

WSAVA Global Pain Council member, Dr Paulo Steagall, says:

[blockquote]The entire Global Pain Council appreciates ACTAsia’s efforts in spreading the word about the importance of improving animal pain management and welfare in China. We congratulate all of the veterinarians who took part in the project, especially the winner, Dr Yu.[/blockquote]
