Dr Hannah Capon Recognized with WSAVA Companion Animal Welfare Award

We are proud to announce that the 2025 WSAVA Companion Animal Welfare Award has been awarded to Dr. Hannah Capon (United Kingdom). Her nomination was submitted by the British Small Animal Veterinary Association (BSAVA) in recognition of her tireless commitment to improving the lives of dogs affected by chronic pain, particularly osteoarthritis, and for her pioneering leadership in veterinary education and advocacy.

Dr. Capon is the founder and director of Canine Arthritis Management (CAM), a globally respected initiative that provides accessible, evidence-based resources to veterinary professionals, pet guardians, and canine caregivers. Since its launch in 2016, CAM has grown from a grassroots effort into an international movement, bringing together veterinarians, nurses, physiotherapists, dog trainers, and owners with a shared goal: to improve the welfare of dogs suffering from osteoarthritis and chronic pain.

Her colleagues and supporters emphasize both her innovation and compassion. “Dr. Capon is the most dedicated and passionate advocate in the veterinary world for developing collaborative efforts across multi-disciplinary teams as the main thread in supporting dogs with osteoarthritis,” wrote Dr. Amber Batson, highlighting CAM’s impact through education, social media, and its global symposium, which in 2025 attracted more than 8,000 participants.

Dr. Dan O’Neill of the Royal Veterinary College praised her transformative influence, noting: “Within a few short minutes, she had changed two decades of my prior beliefs as a practising veterinary surgeon on how to best exercise and keep dogs to protect their joint function… Hannah has changed how so many people think about pain and suffering in dogs.”

Her work also resonates deeply on a personal level with those around her. Veterinary nurse Evie Tummon reflected: “Her bedside manner with dogs and caregivers is second to none—her relaxed nature, warmth, and genuine empathy build a level of trust and rapport that is incredibly powerful and deeply valued by the families she supports. She treats every animal as if they were her own.

Commenting on her recognition, WSAVA President Dr. Jim Berry said: “Dr. Capon embodies the essence of this award—compassion, advocacy, and a relentless commitment to animal welfare. Through her work with Canine Arthritis Management, she has not only transformed how we understand and treat chronic pain in dogs but also inspired a global community of professionals and caregivers to do better. Her leadership and dedication are an inspiration to us all.”
