Prof. Volk is internationally renowned for his pioneering work in epilepsy research and neurology. His groundbreaking studies on the management of canine epilepsy, including the development of consensus treatment guidelines and innovative diagnostic approaches, have transformed the way veterinarians worldwide understand and treat this complex condition. Beyond epilepsy, his research has advanced knowledge in medical detection dogs, neuropathic pain, neuropharmacology, and translational medicine, bridging the gap between veterinary and human neurology.
Colleagues describe him as both a brilliant scientist and an inspiring mentor. “I have met many impressive individuals in veterinary academia, but few have shown the level of scientific achievement and impact that Holger has – he is truly inspirational and innovative,” said Richard Meeson. Similarly, Denis Novak remarked: “Holger has a charismatic character, great energy, and vision. He inspires teamwork, promotes advanced ideas, and creates a positive working atmosphere. His scientific and societal impact continues to serve as lasting inspiration.”
Prof. Volk currently serves as Chair of the Department of Small Animal Medicine and Surgery at the University of Veterinary Medicine in Hannover, Germany, and continues to lead cutting-edge clinical and experimental research that benefits both animal and human health. His work exemplifies the impact of veterinary science on global health challenges and the advancement of One Health principles.
Commenting on his recognition, WSAVA President Dr. Jim Berry said: “Prof. Volk’s contributions to veterinary neurology and scientific achievement are nothing short of transformative. His research has improved the lives of countless animals around the world and inspired a new generation of scientists. We are honored to present him with the WSAVA International Award for Scientific Achievement.”
Prof. Volk expressed his gratitude for the award, saying: “I am deeply honoured to receive the 2025 International Award for Scientific Achievement from WSAVA. This recognition truly reflects the dedication and passion of my team and collaborators in improving human and animal health #OneWelfare #TiHo. I am profoundly grateful to my mentors, colleagues, and students, to my family—my anchor and inspiration—and for the privilege of working at the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover, which has provided us with the soil to grow academically.”
