We are seeking members to join our Dental Committee. The committee's goals is to improve the dental health of small animal veterinary patients worldwide.

Name of committee and a short description of the desired new position(s)

We are seeking new members, including specialists and enthusiasts from around the world, to help review and revise our dental guidelines. Additional responsibilities include creating toolkits and conducting regional and potentially global continuing education (CE) sessions. 

Description of the committee’s work and goal

The Dental Committee’s primary purpose is the publication of the WSAVA Dental Guidelines.  The plan is for this to be published in mid-2025.  After that, dissemination and promotion of the guidelines via toolkits, webinars, and toolkits will be performed.

Detailed description of the desired candidates

We are looking for Diplomates of the American & European Veterinary Dental Colleges as well as enthusiasts with a special interest and understanding of veterinary dentistry.  Candidates should have firm knowledge of the English language and have experience with scientific writing and ideally lecturing.  Social media/marketing experience is also of value.   

List of responsibilities from committee members

  • Critically analyze current clinical guidelines, recent research studies, and meta-analyses.
  • Evaluate the quality, relevance, and rigor of evidence to determine updates or changes.
  • Work closely with other committee members, often from diverse professional and geographical backgrounds, to draft and refine guidelines.
  • Participate in regular meetings to discuss findings, recommendations, and revisions
  • Consider the practical implementation of guidelines in different regions, accounting for cultural, economic, and resource variations.
  • Gather feedback from regional stakeholders to ensure guidelines are universally applicable.
  • Ensure that all recommendations align with the latest evidence-based practices.
  • Provide input on best practices for various healthcare settings and resource levels.
  • Attend and participate in face to face and virtual meetings.
  • Respond to electronic communications in a timely manner.
  • Ability and willingness to communicate as a speaker/presenter of such Dental Committee sanctioned information as needed.
  • Participate in Dental Committee projects.
  • Attend the WSAVA Congress at least every other year.
  • Adhere to the WSAVA values and Code of Conduct.
  • Show evidence of ongoing engagement with committee functions. The membership will be reviewed yearly for diversity, participation, and productivity that performance, based on the responsibilities of a committee member detailed herewith and in the committee Terms of Reference (ToR) will be evaluated after a year by the chair.  If performance cannot be improved, the member may be asked to resign before the end of their term.

Remuneration for this role

All WSAVA committee members including the chairperson are volunteers. However, reasonable expenses incurred  whilst carrying out WSAVA duties will be reimbursed, in accordance with our travel and expenses policy.

Time commitment

The tenure of a committee member is a maximum of three years with one extension possible. The committee will meet at intervals to ensure key milestones and deliverables are met as a minimum once every two months. Because committee members may reside across a broad range of time zones, electronic written communications may take the place of some of the face-to-face electronic meetings. On average, you can expect to provide up to three to four hours of time to the role each month.

*All nominees for membership of any WSAVA committee/group are required to provide a letter of Good Standing from the WSAVA member organization of which they are a member. This requirement does not apply to nominees who are not members of a WSAVA organization (e.g. non-veterinarians) whose expertise may be necessary for specialist committees/groups. A person of Good Standing is defined as someone who has complied with all explicit obligations of the association and who is not subject to any form of sanction, suspension or disciplinary censure. This letter is not a recommendation from the association that the nominee is the best person for the position. WSAVA committee positions are not chosen by member organizations – the Committee Chair ultimately decides on the best candidate for the position and the choice is ratified by the Membership and Nomination Committee and the Executive Board. This letter indicates only that the WSAVA member association has no objection to the nomination.
