The World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) is delighted to announce that Obsuman Dabeta Negasa, a fifth-year veterinary student at the Addis Ababa University College of Veterinary Medicine and Agriculture (Ethiopia), has been awarded the 2025 WSAVA Michael J. Day Scholarship, supported by MSD Animal Health.
Obsuman’s winning project, “Assessing barriers to dog vaccination and immunity development in Ethiopia – implications for global rabies elimination strategies,” impressed the selection committee for its scientific merit, clarity, and strong potential impact on rabies control efforts worldwide.
The WSAVA Michael J. Day Scholarship supports early-career veterinarians and students from emerging regions whose research contributes to the advancement of companion animal medicine globally. The program honors the late Professor Michael J. Day, a world-renowned veterinary immunologist, educator, and advocate for vaccination and One Health.
Congratulating Obsuman on behalf of the WSAVA Vaccination Committee, Professor Mary Marcondes, its Chair, said: “This year’s winning project beautifully reflects the spirit of Professor Michael J. Day’s legacy — combining scientific curiosity with compassion and a strong commitment to advancing both animal and human health. We are proud to support Obsuman’s research and look forward to seeing its contribution to rabies elimination efforts in Ethiopia and beyond”.
The scholarship is made possible through the generous support of MSD Animal Health, a global leader in veterinary innovation and education.
