WSAVA Represented at the UN High-Level Meeting on Antimicrobial Resistance

On September 26, Dr. Ellen van Nierop, our Immediate Past-President, and Dr. Jennifer Granick, Co-Chair of WSAVA's Therapeutics Committee, participated in the United Nations High-Level Meeting on Antimicrobial Resistance 2024 during the 79th General Assembly session.

Dr. van Nierop contributed to a distinguished panel discussion centered on addressing antimicrobial resistance (AMR) through a comprehensive approach that encompasses human health, animal health and welfare, agrifood systems, and environmental protection. The discussion highlighted the importance of integrated surveillance, capacity building, sustainable resource management, and investment—essential components in the global effort to combat AMR.

During her presentation, Dr Ellen highlighted: “Living with a pet gives us a lot of health benefits like lowering blood pressure, reducing stress and better immunity. Basically companion animals are to be considered one of the resources that might reduce the need for antimicrobials in humans”.
