Review a paper recommended by WSAVA Past President Dr Colin Burrows

The WSAVA’s official scientific journal, the Journal of Small Animal Practice (JSAP), has created a ‘virtual issue’ of all of the papers nominated for the 2022 JSAP awards. It is available for free access by WSAVA members until May 26.
Among the papers is the best small animal medicine paper on the topic of stress in client-owned dogs related to clinical examination location. It is authored by Dr Wendy Mandese, a colleague of WSAVA Past President Dr Colin Burrows at the University of Florida, USA.
He says: “I was delighted to learn that a colleague of mine, Dr Wendy Mandese, had won the Dunkin Award from the BSAVA for the best small animal medicine paper published in JSAP in the 12 months to September 2021. The paper is worth a read by practitioners as it has implications for every veterinarian who conducts a physical examination on dogs. Using Fear Free examination techniques and standard criteria to assess stress the authors showed that animals examined without their owners present in a common treatment area showed significantly increased fear anxiety and stress relative to identical assessments conducted in an exam room. Some might consider this to be intuitive, but it has never been shown before using an elegantly designed and relative study.”
