WSAVA participates in first companion animal welfare conference in China

WSAVA president and committee members addressed delegates on welfare-related issues

WSAVA President Dr Siraya Chunekamrai, Dr Natasha Lee, Chair of the WSAVA Animal Wellness and Welfare Committee, and Dr Ping-Chih Teng, member of the WSAVA Global Nutrition Committee, all participated as speakers in the first International Animal Welfare conference in China, which took place on 14-16 September in Hangzhou province. The conference was sponsored by the Animal Welfare Branch of the Chinese Veterinary Medical Association with the aim of improving companion animal welfare in China.  The WSAVA speakers made their presentations online to the in-person event as COVID-19 restrictions currently limit international travel to China.

Dr Chunekamrai’s presentation was entitled: ‘What is Animal Welfare and Why is it Important to Humans? Who should be responsible and what is the role of the veterinarian?’  Dr Lee discussed ‘Advancing Animal Welfare in Hospitals’, referencing the WSAVA’s Animal Welfare Guidelines.  Dr Ping-Chih Teng presented a lecture entitled: ‘Food restrictions prior to surgery or other procedures and a return after any fasting, veterinary procedures, or recovery from illness.’

Improving companion animal welfare is one of the WSAVA’s key goals.
