Erratum: WSAVA Guidelines for the Control of Reproduction in Dogs and Cats

Following the publication of the WSAVA Guidelines for the Control of Reproduction in Dogs and Cats in May 2024, the authors have issued an updated erratum to address additional concerns and to ensure that the guidelines reflect inclusive, globally sensitive, and scientifically accurate perspectives.

Figure Legends

The figure legends for Figure 66 and Figure 67 were inadvertently mixed up in the published article. We regret any confusion this error has caused.

Section 6: Ethics of Reproduction Control in dogs and cats

The authors acknowledge a lack of consensus among WSAVA Committees and Member Associations regarding the recommendations provided in Section 6: Ethics of Reproduction Control in Dogs and Cats. The following clarifications are made:

  • The use of the term “feral” may not be appropriate in all instances of its use
  • The authors recognize that there is a wide spectrum of approaches to “responsible pet ownership” that ensure animal welfare but do not always rely on physical and behavioural restriction of dogs and cats.

To better address the complexities covered in section 6, WSAVA is working with outside experts and organisations to produce and expanded guidance document covering these issues.

The authors remain committed to providing accurate and globally relevant resources for the veterinary community. These updates reaffirm WSAVA’s dedication to advancing veterinary medicine and supporting the diverse global community it serves.
