This presentation will provide insight into managing canine and feline patients with nutrition. Nutritional management of common scenarios that present to small animal veterinary teams will be discussed, including senior patient care, acute gastroenteritis, chronic kidney disease, and feline lower urinary tract disease.
This lecture begins with a discussion of the veterinarian-client bond and the importance of optimal communication. The focus will then turn to challenges associated with communication in veterinary practice and offer strategies to address them with an emphasis on using a team approach.
This presentation reviews the canine intestinal microbiota in health and disease, including how to assess and support it, in a case-based context. The short- and long-term clinical impact of antibiotics on the intestinal microbiome also will be discussed.

Pet owners may want to know more about pet food, but the conversations are sometimes challenging. Obstacles to diet discussions and their potential solutions will be addressed. Core communication skills and how to apply stages of change theory to nutrition consultations will be presented.
Strategies to optimize voluntary water intake of cats, and the subsequent production of less concentrated urine, can be important to the long-term management of some feline diseases. However, few of the commonly recommended strategies are supported with evidence. This lecture will cover what is known to be helpful, what appears to be unsuccessful, and what remains speculative.
Dietary elimination trials are critical for the diagnosis of potential adverse food reactions and allergies, particularly when dermatological signs are observed with concurrent gastrointestinal signs. This webinar will address diet selection, appropriate length, assessing and monitoring response, next steps at trial completion, and communication to improve adherence and manage owner expectations.
