Bringing Veterinary Professionals and Communities Together in Sri Lanka: An ACAPSL Success Story

As part of our series showcasing the work and achievements of WSAVA Member Associations, we highlight an initiative from the Association of Companion Animal Practitioners of Sri Lanka (ACAPSL) that brought together veterinary professionals, pet owners, industry partners and animal welfare organizations to advance companion animal health and welfare.

Held from 17–19 July 2026 at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH) in Colombo, PET EXPO 2026 combined a Scientific Congress with a public pet exhibition, creating a national platform for veterinary education, public engagement and responsible pet ownership.

Connecting Veterinary Education with Public Awareness

The Scientific Congress offered veterinary professionals and students’ opportunities to learn from local and international speakers, exchange clinical knowledge and explore developments in companion animal medicine.

Alongside the Congress, the public exhibition featured veterinary hospitals, animal health companies, welfare organizations and pet-related services. Educational activities, expert discussions, demonstrations and adoption initiatives helped bring important messages about preventive healthcare, responsible pet ownership and animal welfare to pet owners and families.

ACAPSL also extended its outreach beyond Colombo through a roadshow in Southern, Northwestern and Kandy in Sri Lanka. Further, in parallel to PET EXPO 2026 ACAPSL involved to organize first-ever pet friendly train rides in Sri Lanka. The event’s inauguration was attended by Sri Lankan Prime Minister Dr Harini Amarasuriya as Chief Guest, highlighting the importance of animal welfare and society’s shared responsibility towards street animals.

Collaboration at the Heart of Success

PET EXPO 2026 brought together veterinarians, students, businesses, sponsors, welfare organizations and volunteers around a shared goal. Their contributions helped ACAPSL reach audiences beyond its professional membership and create opportunities for meaningful engagement across the companion animal sector.

The initiative demonstrated the value of combining professional education with public engagement. By making veterinary knowledge accessible beyond the conference setting, ACAPSL created opportunities to raise awareness, strengthen relationships between the profession and the community, and encourage responsible pet ownership.

Bringing the Companion Animal Community Together

PET EXPO 2026 brought ACAPSL’s vision to life by creating a single platform for veterinary professionals, pet owners, students, the pet care industry, animal welfare organizations and the wider public.

By bringing these diverse groups together, the event created opportunities for exchange, collaboration and engagement across Sri Lanka’s companion animal sector. The combination of scientific education, industry participation and public activities made PET EXPO 2026 a significant initiative for ACAPSL, strengthening connections across the community and raising the profile of companion animal health and welfare.

PET EXPO 2026 demonstrated how a veterinary association can use collaboration, education and public engagement to strengthen its connection with society and advance companion animal health and welfare.
