Not only is our Therapeutic Guidelines Group (TGG) working to ensure the accessibility of companion animal medicines globally, but it is also promoting practice in the selection and responsible use of medicines – in particular the responsible use of antimicrobials. As part of its work in this area, the TGG has recently created an infographic to support and facilitate the appropriate use of antimicrobial agents in veterinary practice.
While a number of infographics already address this issue, the TGG felt there was a need to focus specifically on the decision-making process at the time of prescribing. To fill this ‘gap’, it has worked with Professor Jacqueline Norris and Associate Professor Jane Heller of the AMR Vet Collective in the development of the concept of the Six Moments of Veterinary Antimicrobial Prescribing. Each ‘Moment’ is illustrated in the infographic, together with the various elements and factors associated that veterinarians should consider in each prescribing decision.
TGG member Dr Stephen Page says: “The infographic is part of an international effort to reinforce continuing international improvement in the appropriate use of antimicrobial agents. We hope all WSAVA members find it useful.”
