Train the trainer: A case study from Sri Lanka!

First lecture and practical workshop on small animal dentistry a great success!

Dr Chandika Hiroshan Wickramasinghe, Assistant Secretary of the Sri Lanka Veterinary Association (SLVA), has a strong interest in veterinary dentistry. He has attended many WSAVA Congress sessions on this topic and recently spent a month learning with Dr Brook Niemiec, Chair of the WSAVA Dental Guidelines Group, at his practice in California, USA.

On his return, he shared his knowledge with colleagues and final year students, holding a practical workshop for 16 colleagues, working in small groups of four. The session offered a full day’s program with lectures in the morning and a two-hour practical session in the afternoon.

The overall response from participants was very positive and he hopes to run another session soon. He says:

[blockquote author=”” link=”” target=”_blank”]This was the first ever lecture and a practical session on small animal dentistry in Sri Lanka – it’s not covered at all in the veterinary curriculum here – and it was a great success. I hope to run another session later this year.[/blockquote]

Brook Niemiec adds:

[blockquote author=”” link=”” target=”_blank”]This event is exactly what we envisioned when we began work on the WSAVA’s Global Dental Guidelines and introduced the ‘train the trainer’ concept. Bringing dental education to countries where it is not taught in veterinary school and where access to CE is limited is a key priority for the WSAVA. The ability to provide this education despite a global pandemic is a huge win for veterinary medicine. I look forward to more of these success stories in the future.[/blockquote]
