Dr Salazar is also Chair of the Local Host Committee for this year’s World Congress in Lima.
Could you introduce yourself briefly to our members?
Soy médico veterinario especializado en medicina y cirugía de pequeños animales, tengo una clínica privada con un equipo de trabajo de 10 personas, y doy clases en la Universidad en imagenología, medicina y cirugía de animales de compañía. Estoy casado con Keyla y soy padre de tres hijas, y presidente de la Asociación de Médicos Veterinarios de Práctica en Pequeños Animales (AMVEPPA) de Perú.
I am a veterinarian specializing in medicine and small animal surgery. I work in a clinic as part of a team of ten. I also teach imaging, medicine and small animal surgery to veterinary students at university. I am married to Keyla and have three daughters.

Could you introduce your AMVEPPA to our members?
AMVEPPA nació en el 2002 por iniciativa del Dr Rau Benavente y un grupo de médicos veterinarios jóvenes, su fundador fue quien inscribió a WSAVA y FIAVAC. Es una asociación sin fines de lucro que se formó básicamente para poder brindar educación continua y actualización en medicina veterinaria a sus socios.
AMVEPPA was founded in 2002 by Dr Rau Benavente and a group of young veterinarians. It is a member of WSAVA and FIAVAC. It is a non-profit association and we focus on providing continuing education to our members.
What are the key challenges – and opportunities – for veterinarians in Peru currently?
Los desafíos de los veterinarios peruanos siguen siendo la adecuada capacitación, ya que no existe especialidad dentro del área de pequeños animales dentro de mi país. Para especializarse se requiere salir del país, lo que implica un presupuesto oneroso, aparte de estar lejos de la familia por años. También hace falta mejorar la imagen del médico veterinario en la sociedad peruana. Somos vistos como personal de baja capacidad, más como trabajadores generales que como médicos. Como oportunidad veo que el mercado laboral va en ascenso, la pandemia ha ayudado en ello.
The key challenge facing Peruvian veterinarians continues to be adequate training as there is no speciality in small animals in our country. To specialize, it is necessary to leave the country, which is expensive as well as meaning that veterinarians have to leave their family. We also need to increase understanding and value of our work as veterinarians are still seen as low-skilled staff, rather than being similar to doctors. On a more positive note, the pandemic, while difficult in so many ways, has increased demand for veterinarians.

Why did AMVEPPA choose to be a WSAVA member?
El estar asociado a WSAVA nos permite cumplir con uno de los objetivos para la cual AMVEPPA fue creada la asociación, sobre todo en lo que es educación continua, estar pendiente de los avances científicos y desarrollo personal de los médicos veterinarios peruanos. Un tema a considerar en el futuro a corto plazo es realizar proyectos relacionados a bienestar profesional que tiene WSAVA e implementar para todos los médicos veterinarios peruanos.
Being associated with WSAVA allows us to fulfil one of the objectives for which AMVEPPA was created, specifically to provide continuing education. Our membership also helps us to stay up-to-date with scientific advances and to support the personal development of Peruvian veterinarians. We are also looking to carry out projects related to professional well-being. This is an activity supported by the WSAVA.
AMVEPPA will be hosting World Congress in October. How are you feeling about this and how are the preparations going?
Es un orgullo tener la sede de este congreso, una oportunidad única de educación continua de alta calidad. Será el congreso más grande que hemos visto hasta ahora en el Perú. Estamos trabajando intensamente para que todo salga bien y que el mundo se lleva una excelente impresión de mi país y que sera para el participante de este evento una experiencia maravillosa.
We are proud to host this Congress as it is a unique opportunity to offer high quality continuing education. It will be the largest Congress we have seen so far in Peru and we are working hard to ensure that everything goes well, the our colleagues get an excellent impression of Peru and that it is a wonderful experience for everyone who participates.
What does AMVEPPA hope delegates will learn about Peru during their stay?
Que es un país hermoso, con una gastronomía sin igual y con gente de gran calidad humana. Que es posible hacer un evento de esta magnitud aquí, y que siempre recuerden los momentos maravillosos que tuvieron al estar en Perú.
I hope they will learn that Peru is a beautiful country, with unparalleled gastronomy and with people of great human quality. I hope that they will always remember the time they spend here.

Could you tell us something about yourself?
Mi trabajo es mi hobby, pero también me gusta pasar tiempo en familia, sobre todo salir a pasear, a un día de campo o viajar con ellos. Me gusta mucho ver películas en mi tiempo libre. Soy amante de la biología y arqueología.
My job is my hobby, but I also like spending time with my family, especially walking, going for picnics or traveling with them. I really like to watch movies in my spare time and I am a lover of biology and archaeology.
