Companion animal veterinarians and COVID-19 – how are your members faring?

Could the WSAVA help your association in advocating for your members?

While all countries are affected by COVID-19 pandemic, there are big differences in the way governments are responding to it. In most countries, the veterinary profession has been classified as an essential service, as recommended by the OIE, but many of our members are still reporting difficulties in operating and feel they have been overlooked.

Companion animal veterinary teams are working in communities in every country to protect the health and welfare of pets and reduce suffering. In so doing, they are also playing a crucial role in supporting the mental health and wellbeing of their owners. In many cases, their relationship with their companion animals has played a key role in helping to sustain them during the difficulties of the last year.

Veterinary teams are also providing an essential service in terms of supporting veterinary public health as they provide surveillance for diseases affecting both humans and animals. In some countries, they are also being called upon to assist in human COVID-19 vaccination drives.

We join with the OIE, World Veterinary Association, Federation of Veterinarians of Europe, American Veterinary Medical Association and s for Disease Control and Prevention in calling for all veterinarians and veterinary teams to be classified as essential workers immediately and to be considered for early vaccination in order that they can continue their vital work safely.

Please share your experience with us by emailing our CEO Arpita Bhose and let us know if you would like us to send you a letter that can be forwarded to your government or regulatory authority.
