Working to overcome variations in regional veterinary oncology understanding and treatment
h3
Cancer is common in pets, affecting almost 50% of dogs more than 10 years of age. Yet, while it increases in prevalence, a survey undertaken by the WOW Group soon after its launch in 2021 showed that veterinarians, globally, rated their knowledge of oncology at just five out ten. They called for more education and resources to help them treat oncology patients more effectively.
In response that WSAVA Oncology Working Group (WOW Group) set out on a mission to raise awareness of the latest thinking in cancer therapy and to promote best practice globally..

New veterinary oncology resources from the WOW Group
The survey undertaken by the WOW Group helped it to prioritize its efforts to educate and support WSAVA members. An ‘Oncology Glossary’ was the first resource produced, explaining in straightforward language many of the medical terms used to describe the presentation, diagnosis and treatment of cancer in pets with images to help illustrate some of the key terms. The document is available for free download, together with other resources, from the WSAVA website in a range of languages.

The WOW team is now working on additional, user-friendly tools, while continuing the development of a set of easy-to-use, accessible Global Guidelines for veterinary oncology practice. It is also collaborating with veterinary journals to enable access to oncology articles to WSAVA members which are usually only available behind a paywall. It is currently working with the Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery, providing summaries on a series of oncology-based articles that will be available for WSAVA members on the WOW page of the WSAVA website. Check them out here.

“A key focus of our work is to raise awareness of the different types of tumors affecting companion animals. Many of these tumors also occur in humans so we see an opportunity to improve the lives of both animal and human patients by raising standards of treatment for veterinary oncology patients.
It is salutary to see the huge demand for veterinary oncology education all over the world. We have much to do but are excited at the opportunity to support WSAVA members and to offer new hope to oncology patients and their owners globally.”
