New WSAVA Course on Infectious Diseases in Latin America

Boost your knowledge of infectious diseases in Latin America!

We have launched a three-module online course covering the infectious diseases of dogs and cats most prevalent in Latin America. The aim of this course is to support veterinarians across the continent in preventing and managing these diseases. The course is led by Professor Mary Marcondes from Brazil. Dr Marcondes is Chair of the WSAVA’s Vaccination Guidelines Group (VGG) and a Scientific Consultant in the area of infectious diseases and vaccinology in dogs and cats.

The first module of the course introduces the various diseases, highlights the importance of a One Health approach in preventing them, and makes recommendations as to vaccination practice, in line with the WSAVA’s Vaccination Guidelines prepared by the VGG. The second module covers infectious diseases caused by viruses and bacteria while the third focuses on vector-borne diseases.

The course is available in EnglishSpanish and Portuguese. Some of the lectures included in the modules are given in Portuguese and translated into Spanish. Others have been recorded in English and translated into Portuguese and Spanish. Speakers include global experts including Dr Michael Lappin, Chair of the WSAVA’s One Health Committee and Professor Jane Sykes, Chair of the WSAVA’s Scientific Committee. All modules are now available for free viewing on the WSAVA Academy.

The creation of the course has been generously supported by MSD Animal Health, the Sole Partner of the WSAVA Vaccination Guidelines Group since its inception in 2006. The company has recently become a Diamond Partner of the WSAVA.

Dr Marcondes explained: “There is a concerning lack of information on infectious diseases for small animal practitioners across Latin America so I was delighted to be invited by MSD Animal Health to develop this course in collaboration with a number of global experts. We hope the content will help to fill the current ‘education gap’ in this area and enable veterinarians across the continent to manage and treat patients with infectious diseases in a way that supports their welfare and is scientifically robust.”
