Pioneering the principles of Shelter Medicine around the world

AWWC takes the lead in educating veterinarians globally on this emerging discipline

Shelter medicine is a growing field in veterinary medicine, focused on providing optimum care to homeless animals in shelters. It is a discipline which necessitates combining the healthcare needs of individual animals with the needs of the entire population of the shelter.

As a discipline, shelter medicine was pioneered in the USA but the AWWC is now working to see its principles applied all around the world. It recently conducted an eight-hour course on shelter medicine on zoom which proved very popular with our members. It is now available on the WSAVA Academy so please find time to watch it if you’d like to improve your knowledge of this important discipline.

Dr Natasha Lee
Chair of the WSAVA AWWC

While many shelters are opened with good intentions, without good management, many animals will suffer within them. By applying the principles of shelter medicine, we can help to improve animals’ lives and help them find their forever homes more quickly. This is why it’s important that these principles are adopted much more widely.

We encourage WSAVA members with an interest in shelter medicine to view the presentations. A certificate will be provided on the successful completion of the questions at the end of each section.
