In case you missed it, earlier this year, more than 5,000 veterinary professionals, including more than 1,500 WSAVA members, took part in an online survey to help gauge the state of the profession globally and the impact of the pandemic.

While the survey covered all aspects of veterinary practice, not just wellness, the impact of the many additional pressures on veterinary teams imposed by the pandemic on their mental health came through clearly. CM Research presented the top-line results during Congress.

CM Research presented the top-line results during Congress. They are that:

  • Veterinarians and veterinary nurses/techs need to feel more valued
  • They need resources and time to tackle mental health issues
  • They need support to educate owners in order to improve patient outcomes
  • They need innovation to manage the changing landscape and growth in the pet population.

Dr Nienke Endenburg comments:

[blockquote]Many of the results of this survey chime with the findings of our own research in confirming a probable correlation between a career in veterinary medicine and an elevated risk of mental health issues. The additional stresses on veterinary teams during the pandemic have only made things worse.[/blockquote]

[blockquote]We are concerned at the wellness challenges being faced many thousands of veterinary professionals worldwide and it gives added urgency to the important work that many of our member associations are already carrying out to improve the mental health of their members.[/blockquote]

[blockquote]We look forward to being able support their efforts once we have created the WSAVA’s Global Wellness Guidelines.[/blockquote]
