WSAVA contributes to Animal Welfare Week 2021 in the Philippines

WSAVA joins forces with the Philippines’ Animal Hospital Association to help raise welfare standards

Representatives from WSAVA member association the Philippines’ Animal Hospital Association joined WSAVA President Dr Siraya Chunekamrai and WSAVA Animal Wellness and Welfare Committee Chair Dr Natasha (Nat) Lee, in marking Animal Welfare Week in the Philippines from Oct 4-8. Members of the Philippines Veterinary Medical Association and the country’s Committee on Animal Welfare also participated.

The Philippines is one of the first countries in Asia to have passed a law protecting and promoting the health and welfare of animals and its Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) hosted a series of webinars during Animal Welfare week to celebrate the new law. In one of these, Dr Nat Lee presented a webinar on the WSAVA’s work in animal welfare, highlighting its Global Guidelines for Animal Welfare, which focus on the key principles and practical application of animal welfare.

She says: “As the public becomes more concerned for animals, it is vital that veterinarians step up to become the leading advocates for animal welfare by educating themselves then applying it in their daily practice. Our Global Guidelines for Animal Welfare can help practitioners take simple steps to improve the welfare of animals under their care.”
