#WSAVA Poland Speaker of the Year announced

Congratulations to Dr Elsa Beltran!

Giving our delegates the opportunity to hear the latest thinking from world-class speakers who convey their knowledge clearly and with passion is essential at WSAVA Congress. Each year, we ask delegates to nominate their Speaker of this Year and we are delighted to announce that the winner from #WSAVAPoland earlier this year is Dr Elsa Beltran for her lecture on Vestibular Syndrome.

Dr Beltran is an Associate Professor of Veterinary Neurology and Neurosurgery at the Royal Veterinary College in London, UK. She will receive her award during the opening ceremony of #WSAVA2021 on November 13. Earlier that day she will deliver a lecture entitled: ‘Clinical reasoning in dogs with acute spinal cord injury, what should I know?’

She says:

Lecturing at WSAVA Congress was an amazing opportunity to share my passion for veterinary neurology with colleagues around the world. Nearly three decades ago, Jozefowicz (1994) introduced the term ‘neurophobia’ in medical education to ribe the ‘fear of neurology’ among medical students. Today, educators are still working on how to overcome it. During lectures, it is important to integrate medical knowledge and clinical neurology to support effective learning. We, as speakers in veterinary neurology, aim to innovate using strategies for mitigating neurophobia, which will result in improving the clinical approach and potential treatment for neurological patients.

It is an absolute honour to win this award. I would like to thank the WSAVA and all the delegates who voted for me. It has been a challenging year in many ways and it is admirable that the WSAVA has continued to provide excellent postgraduate and undergraduate education around the world and to see its participants’ desire for learning
